Contains chiefly incoming letters to Bigelow from colleagues, from staff at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and from his son William S. Bigelow. Also includes some drafts of Bigelow's outgoing correspondence to George C. Shattuck, William Bigelow, and others, expressing Bigelow's disagreement over various MGH appointment and financial policies and related matters, and concerning his instrument collection - especially surgical apparatus sent to the University of Tokyo. Incoming correspondence pertains to the work of Sir Henry Thompson and instruments used in Bigelow's lithotrity operations; to his appointments; to a request for his support in the vivisection controversy; and to domestic matters, such as dog breeding and ordering harnesses for horses. Other papers include a galley proof of Bigelow's address to MGH trustees, document for a subscription to raise money for the physically handicapped, love poem and other personal manuscripts, and passports of Bigelow family, 1849-1869. Also contains a few letters belonging to William S. Bigelow.
